WHAT IS ORTHO-BIONOMY?
Ortho-Bionomy is a gentle approach to body work. The
term comes from the Greek roots: ortho meaning ‘straight
or correct’, bio referring to the ‘natural
laws of life’ and nomy is implying ‘the
study of’. You might say it is the study of
the correct positioning of the body according to the
natural laws of life. It draws on the body’s
innate wisdom to self-correct or self heal on all
levels physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.
PRINCIPLES OF ORTHO-BIONOMY
- moves away from pain towards ease of movement
- bringing awareness to the body by exaggerating what
it is already doing (as in homeopathy where ‘like
treats like’)
- less is more (as in homeopathy)
- for every action there is an equal and opposite
reaction
- respects the individual by not forcing change
- all levels of the work embody the principles of
the work
DEVELOPMENTAL HISTORY
In the early 1970s, Ortho-Bionomy was founded and
developed by Arthur Lincoln Pauls DO, a British osteopath
and Judo instructor with Canadian roots. From his
osteopathic background, he possessed a firm grasp
of the body’s physical structure and how it
relates to the body’s function.
Judo emphasized an Eastern approach to balance, movement
concepts and energetic considerations. Homeopathy
principles such as ‘like heals like’ and
‘less is more’ can also be seen as influencing
his work. He firmly believed in the innate ability
of the body to heal itself. Furthermore, he read an
article by an American Osteopath, Dr. Lawrence Jones
entitled “Spontaneous Release Through Positioning.
1 It demonstrated the self-balancing ability of muscle
reflexes. His personal inspiration and curiosity led
to the evolution of Ortho-Bionomy which he taught
until his death in 1997.
