WHAT IS THERAPEUTIC TOUCH?
Therapeutic Touch is a complementary modality developed
in the early 1970s by Dora Kunz and Dolores Kreiger
PhD. R.N. at New York University. It brings the essence
of ancient healing practices to present day application.
Through the use of the practitioner’s hands,
the energy field is assessed then balanced towards
wholeness and health.
ASSUMPTIONS
Several assumptions underlie Therapeutic Touch
- In a state of health life energy flows freely in,
through and out of the field in an orderly manner
- In disease or injury, the flow of energy is affected
and may be described as obstructed, disordered or
depleted
- Therapeutic Touch practitioners attempt to influence
the energy flow to restore the integrity of the field
and to move it toward wholeness and health.
SESSIONS
Always individualized, a session usually does not
exceed 20 minutes. The client may remain fully clothed.
It can be administered while the client is in a sitting
or lying position and is always followed by a period
of rest.
COMMON EFFECTS
Numerous dissertations and master theses have been
done on Therapeutic Touch Research and experience
have shown the effectiveness of Therapeutic Touch
in:
- eliciting the Relaxation Response and reducing anxiety
- changing the perception of pain
- facilitating the body’s natural restorative
process
- enhancing the rapport between a client and a practitioner,
counselor or therapist
Any condition which could be helped by these effects
can benefit from Therapeutic Touch.
